What acceptable ID looks like

California law is specific about what counts as identification for a notarization: a current California driver's license or ID card, a U.S. passport, another state's driver's license or ID card issued within the last five years, an immigration-stamped foreign passport, or (for certain incarcerated signers) a CDCR inmate ID card. If a signer doesn't have an acceptable ID, California also allows identification through one or two credible witnesses under specific conditions — ask us about this if it applies to your situation.

Every signing is logged & some require a thumbprint

California notaries are required to keep a sequential journal of every notarial act performed, including the signer's information and the ID used. For certain document types — deeds, quitclaim deeds, deeds of trust, and powers of attorney affecting real property — state law also requires a right thumbprint in that journal. It's a small extra step, and we'll let you know in advance if your document needs one.
